Patients with hair loss are advised to consult a specialist for diagnosis of the cause of hair loss and to plan the correct treatment.

Causes of hair loss

Dr. Mingkwan Wichaidit, Director of the Institute of Dermatology, Department of Medical Services, provided additional information about the causes of hair loss, saying that there are many causes of hair loss, including:

1. Hereditary hair loss

can occur in both men and women, but it is most common in men. It appears as fine hair, making the hair in that area appear thinner. It mostly occurs in the middle of the head and forehead.

2. Hair loss occurs

when hair stops growing temporarily due to illness or extreme stress or a lack of nutrients such as iron or vitamin D, causing the hair growth cycle to stop and fall out more than usual.

3. Alopecia areata

occurs without a clear cause. There will be hair loss in specific areas. The hair loss area will be round or oval, with clear boundaries. There will be no hair in the center of the scalp in that area. It is not red, painful, itchy, flaky or scaly.

4. Hair loss from pulling out hair is common in adults and children who are stressed from various causes. Patients will pull their own hair until it becomes thin. The scalp area where the hair is lost will not have a rash or be flaky and will have short hair stubble.

5. Hair loss from fungus. Scalp fungus, or ringworm, is a common condition in children. It is caused by a fungal infection that causes the hair to fall out in patches, as a red, itchy rash, and flakes or inflamed lumps that look like boils. There may or may not be an associated fungal infection (ringworm).

6. Hair loss from hair styling. Hair curling, hair dyeing, hair perming, hair blow drying or other methods can cause hair loss from scalp inflammation or brittle hair.

7. Hair loss from other diseases. Patients with certain diseases, such as SLE, may experience hair loss, thinning hair, along with chronic fever, joint pain, and butterfly rash on the face. Some hair loss diseases may cause inflammation in the stem cell area, causing scarring hair loss that does not heal.

Guidelines for patients with hair loss

Dr. Mingkwan further recommends that patients with hair loss problems should follow these guidelines:

1. Observe your symptoms to see if you have abnormal hair loss , such as losing more than 100 strands of hair per day. If you have abnormal hair loss, see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment according to the standards.

2. Keep your hair and scalp clean at all times.

3. Avoid using excessive chemicals or heat on your scalp.

4. For those who have permed or dyed their hair, they should nourish their hair with conditioner to prevent tangling and breakage.

5. If you feel itchy, you should see a doctor for treatment. Avoid pulling or plucking your hair.

6. Do not buy medicine to treat yourself before seeing a doctor to get a correct diagnosis before treatment. In cases where there has just been severe hair loss or scarring hair loss, a specialist should be consulted.
